Jane McGonigal on The Colbert Report

Jane McGonigal on the Colbert Report

McGonigal is plugging her new book, Reality is Broken. I just added that book to my wish list too.

UPDATE: Gamasutra has a short excerpt from McGonigal's new book.

She's right you know. You are the same person in real life that you are when playing video games. The problem is, have you ever noticed how many jerks there are that play video games?

Well, you have a point there Anon. Make there can be a game to teach people how to be nice to each other?

If my science magazines are to be believed, kids learn how to be nice during unstructured play on a playground- and that's hard to duplicate in online play. (I don't have a good article handy, but here's a recent one (assuming the link works).) I'm told that the video game .hack//sign is a single player game where the NPCs are all written as though they were real people playing MMO avatars; it's not the same as having real people, of course, but I wonder if it still has an effect on the player's online manners.

(PS- I was trying to figure out why this topic seemed familiar, until I realized that GBR had touched on this once, twice, thrice a couple years ago. It's good to see it continuing to get more public attention!)
